The dangers of dental disease

Just like humans, pets’ teeth need to be looked after, too but unlike us, they can’t tell anyone when something is wrong. Therefore, we all need to know that the health of their teeth and gums has a significant impact on their overall quality of life.

Dental disease, also known as periodontal disease, is inflammation of the teeth and gums caused by a build-up of plaque. This is made up of food particles, saliva, and bacteria and gradually sticks to the tooth surface. Ultimately, if not removed, plaque will calcify into tartar.

Nowadays, around 80% of cats and dogs over the age of three are suffering from some form of dental disease. Without proper preventive or therapeutic care, plaque can lead to periodontal disease, affecting the tissues and structures supporting the teeth. It can also cause oral pain, tooth loss and even heart or kidney problems.

The most common signs of dental disease are:

  • bad breath
  • yellow-brown tartar around the gumline
  • inflamed, red or bleeding gums
  • excessive drooling
  • broken teeth
  • facial swelling
  • change in eating or chewing habits (especially in cats) and reluctance to eat harder foods
  • evidence of pus near the gums

At MyOwnVet, we understand how important dental care is. Therefore, we offer comprehensive dental services for your dog or cat, from preventive checks to dental extractions and oral surgery.

During our wellness visits, our veterinary professionals provide careful oral examinations for your pets. For older pets, we check for any serious threats such as periodontal disease, oral tumours or excessive tartar build-up. For kitten and puppies, we look for any sign of anomaly in the development of deciduous teeth (baby teeth).

Our friendly vets and nurses are always happy to offer personalized advice and share best practices with our valuable clients. This way, you will keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy for many years to come.
